Mantra Chants

Mantra and sacred chants are used in many traditions and play an important role in Kundalini Yoga.

Many chants were written literally thousands of years ago and are as relevant today as they were when first written. While some mantas are written in English the majority are written in the ancient Sanskrit and Gurmukhi languages, Latin, Hebrew, Greek, Buddhist, and Tibetan.

Sanskrit is a sacred language from ancient India (1500 BCE) and is used in Hindu chants as well as in the various forms of yoga.

Gurmukhi is also a sacred language of the Sikh religion and Gurmukhi chants are used in Kundalini yoga.

I find it of interest that chanting is considered “New Age” when it has been practiced literally for thousands of years.

Mantras are more than songs, poems, or lyrics, they are powerful words chanted in a specific manner to produce specific vibrations that stimulate the chakra points in the body. These vibrations have shown to provide feelings of peace, love, compassion, empathy, intuition, and have shown to help healing.

Each chant was written to provide specific forms of benefits from healing to opening a communication channel with the Divine.

Listening, chanting or singing of mantra during the day helps combat the normal stresses of life. Having trouble falling asleep, try playing some soothing chants on a low volume, life’s daily stresses will ease and bring a feeling of total peace. Experience an incredibly deep and refreshing sleep. Even while sleeping, the vibrations will produce beneficial effects.

I personally have a spiritual mantra station programmed on my Pandora music account. This has become my preferred music throughout the day. In fact, I go on a daily 1-hour meditative walk and listen to mantra music the entire time. Walking in nature with empowering music is a beautiful way to start the day.

There are many sources for mantra music and yogic practices on the internet. If you are interested, check out the 3HO Foundation and you will find a very complete selection of mantras and kundalini yoga practices. An application, Kundalini, is available for IOS and Android devices.

As a person’s spiritual journey deepens, they will find that certain mantras or chants have the most impact on them. It is common for these preferences to change depending on their specific needs.

So listen, chant often and have fun!
