Kundalini Yoga
Science has shown that the human body is comprised of energy. In fact, everything, including the planet and universe, is comprised of energy. This energy comes in many forms, and we commonly see it every day as a gas (the air we breathe), liquid (the water we consume), and solid (every physical object we see). There are also forms of energy that we do not see, such as electrical, magnetic, vibrational, microwave, plasma, gravity, light, radiation. Although not readily seen, all of these forces play a major role in our lives.
It is easy to recognize that the human body is comprised of three (3) forms (gas, liquid, solid) with the majority being water. What we don’t see is the energy that the human body consumes and produces. We consume energy in the food’s that we eat and drink. We also consume energy provided by the sun and daylight.
The energy that we consume allows us to maintain our bodies strength and health, operate and maintain brain function, and perform at our jobs and other daily activities. The results of all this energy being consumed are easy to see. Some results are quite good while others not good. More on this later.
We also produce other energy that is not so easily recognized. Heart energy has been detected and quantified at a distance of 13 feet from a person. A human energy field (aura) surrounds the body as well as an energy field considered by many to be our soul.
The concept of a soul is prevalent in both Eastern and Western religious traditions as well as in many native traditions. There are, however, many differing views on the function the soul and what happens after death.
Human energy levels have a direct link to our overall health and well-being. Simply put, higher energy levels result in a healthier and happier life. Conversely, low energy levels have become an incubator for many health issues.
This brings us to Kundalini Yoga and the role it can play in helping a person enjoy a healthier and happier life.
Kundalini Yoga is a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual practice that allows the practitioner to manage energy levels for the benefit of the human body and mind. Kundalini yoga builds physical strength and endurance, mental clarity, and overall health. The goal of Kundalini yoga is to enable a clear connection between body, mind, and soul, and to open a connection to our inherent Oneness with All. This is commonly referred to as achieving a state of higher consciousness.
Kundalini yoga utilizes three (3) primary practices:
- Physical exercises include breathwork and yoga. Breathwork is necessary to not only properly perform the yoga routines but to also regulate the flow of energy into and out of the body. Please don’t be intimidated by the physical aspects of Kundalini yoga. You can tailor the yoga routines to individual needs and capabilities. Older people who may have physical difficulties can still do limited amounts of physical exercise depending on their physical abilities. Many people sit in a chair while doing modified routines. C
- Chants and Prayer are used to stimulate mental wellbeing and our energy centers or chakra’s.
Chants are written to activate specific chakras. In fact, many of the chants are written in the ancient Sanskrit and Gurmukhi languages. It is not necessary to know the meaning of the words in these chants as the vibrations produced while chanting can achieve the desired effect. For the curious, there are online language programs to learn these languages. Translations are also available online. This in turn can help facilitate meditation sessions.
A daily prayer routine is an important part of any spiritual practice, including Kundalini yoga. Prayer is an essential tool to communicate our needs and desires to the Divine. It is important to remember that these needs and desires are those required for our soul to fulfill this life’s purpose. This is the reason why so many never realize their manifestations. Certainly, a compelling case for each of us to open the communication connection with our soul. - Meditation to quiet our minds and to instill Divine peace and love in our hearts, mind and body. There are many meditation techniques available, this allows everyone to use the technique most suitable and effective for their needs. Dedicated and experienced Kundalini yoga practitioners can achieve a state of “meditating without meditating”. This allows frequent meditation sessions to become a routine throughout the day. No better way to neutralize the daily stresses of living.
Important Notice
We recommend that you do not embark on a rigorous exercise routine until you have discussed your plans with a medical professional who is familiar with your health. Kundalini yoga is a powerful practice in your physical and spiritual life. As with any powerful tool, it is important tolearn the safe operation of the tool. We therefore recommend that you attend Kundalini yoga training, either in person or through virtual classes.
Energy Centers (Chakras)
The human body has 114 chakras with seven (7) primary chakras as shown in the above image.
Each of these seven (7) major chakras are energy centers that influence the flow of energy. Life’s daily stress can create blockages in these centers thereby reducing the flow of this energy. When this occurs, we can develop physical and emotional health issues. A routine practice of Kundalini yoga works to keep this flow of energy clear.
There are many wonderful sources to explore to find out if Kundalini yoga is right for you. The 3HO International (www.3ho.org) is an excellent resource to discover the version of Kundalini yoga popular in western countries. There are also excellent Kundalini yoga centers in cities around the world.
Traditional Kundalini yoga training and practices are also available in many cities. For the more adventurous, a trip to India to attend Kundalini yoga classes is a wonderful experience. I personally attended the Sri Yoga Ashram is Rishikesh, India. A truly beautiful experience.
Lastly, there is a free app available in the IOS and Android mobile app stores called Kundalini. This app provides many useful features including meditations and yoga sets, chants, and kriyas.
